Til Gud Laddoo
Til Gud laddoos are a traditional Indian dessert made with roasted sesame seeds and jaggery. These tasty treats are not only delicious, but also have a long history of use in Ayurveda for their health benefits. Sesame seeds are known to be a rich source of antioxidants and minerals, including calcium, zinc, and iron. In Ayurveda, they are believed to help strengthen the bones and promote overall health. Til Gud ladoos are a staple in every household during the festive occasion of Makar Sankranti. Makar Sankranti celebrates the change in seasons, as the Sun moves back towards the northern hemisphere. The word for oil in Sanskrit, tel, comes from the word til, meaning sesame seeds. These roasted sesame seed balls are the perfect sweet treat for those looking to indulge their sweet tooth while also nourishing their body.
- 3 cups white or brown sesame seeds
- 3 tablespoons ghee
- 1.5 cups jaggery or jaggery powder
Clean and remove any debris from the sesame seeds.
Lightly roast the seeds on medium to low heat until they change color and start popping. You will also be able to smell the sesame.
Be careful not to burn the sesame seeds.
Roasting the sesame seeds helps remove moisture, increasing the shelf life of these ladoos.
Next, grind the sesame seeds coarsely.
If you cannot grind them coarsely, you can also grind half of them finely and leave the remaining half as is.
Now, melt the ghee in a pan and add the jaggery pieces or jaggery powder.
Keep the flame on low or turn it off to melt the jaggery. Be careful not to caramelize the jaggery.
Turn the flame off and add the sesame seeds to the ghee and jaggery. Mix until well combined.
If the jaggery is too dry, you can add another tablespoon of ghee or a couple of tablespoons of milk.
Once the mixture is just cool enough to touch, apply some ghee to your hands.
Take small quantities of the mixture and roll it into a ball shape.
Let it cool to harden, and enjoy!
